Climb Cotopaxi – Guided Summit Expedition

Cotopaxi is a challenging high-altitude climb and previous high-altitude experience is strongly recommended. Climbers should have good physical fitness and be comfortable hiking and climbing at altitude. Our guides will assess mountain and weather conditions during the expedition and make the final safety decisions.

Cotopaxi is a difficult high-altitude mountaineering expedition. The summit is at 5,897 m (19,347 ft), and the route includes glacial terrain, steep sections and prolonged climbing at high altitude. Good physical fitness, appropriate acclimatization and preparation are essential.

Yes. Proper acclimatization is strongly recommended before attempting the Cotopaxi summit. We recommend spending time at altitude and completing suitable acclimatization hikes before the expedition, especially for climbers arriving from low elevations.

The expedition includes technical climbing equipment such as plastic mountain boots, crampons, helmet, ice axe, harness, rope, carabiner and ice stake. Personal mountain clothing and other personal equipment are not included and should be brought by the climber.

During the glacier section, we use a maximum ratio of 2 climbers per professional mountain guide. This allows the guide to provide close supervision while traveling roped together on glacial terrain.

The expedition starts in Machachi, our operational base in Ecuador's Avenue of the Volcanoes. From Machachi, we coordinate private transportation to Cotopaxi National Park and the José Rivas Refuge.

Summit success depends on weather, glacier conditions, physical condition, acclimatization and other mountain factors. Our professional mountain guides make the final decisions regarding safety, route conditions and whether it is appropriate to continue toward the summit.
